Lisa's Visit

Lisa arrived on Sunday evening, but her luggage didn't, compliments of Delta/Hawaiian Airlines this time.  Otherwise, she had no problems with her travel.  On Monday, we went to Maha'ulepu beach and hiked the coastline to Haula beach which is more secluded and usually less populated.  On this occasion, however, we saw probably 10-15 people - a lot considering I've never shared that beach with more than 2 other people.  In any case, Lisa enjoyed the scenery and relative solitude, as did we.

Wednesday, we cruised up the canyon and took Lisa on a real hike on the Canyon Trail.  This is one of my favorite "mellow" hikes to take Maddie and our guests on.  You get great views of Waipo'o falls heading up the road, then nice wide open views into the canyon on much of the hike then views of the waterfall and solitude on the other side of the river.  It's a nice sample of hiking on Kauai and the length and elevation gain is not too bad.
Friday we hiked Sleeping Giant and Lisa managed to stay upright for 99% percent of the hike until she rolled her ankle and bit the dust within sight of the car.
Despite her clumsiness, we left Maddie with her on Friday night to enjoy dinner and live music at Trees lounge in Kapaa with Joe and Chelsae.  The food was very different from the typical Kauai fare and drinks were excellent as well as reasonably priced.  From there we went to Nawiliwili Tavern to meet some other friends and witness the karaoke spectacle.  Some of us (to remain nameless) even participated in the spectacle after some liquid courage.  We had lots of fun, but drank too much and stayed up too late so Saturday was pretty miserable aside from dinner at Kalaheo Cafe which was good.
I had planned a hike up Kahili mountain with some friends on Sunday, but we got rained out.  We did manage to get to the beach, enjoy some pupus and grill before we again got rained out.  Still very enjoyable.
Since I'm so late finishing up this post I'll just list a few other highlights with some pictures.
Lisa, Maddie and I attempted another hike in the canyon in hopes of getting Lisa some views into the valleys of the NaPali coast, but encountered rain about halfway up the road and darker skies ahead.  Since it was raining over most of the island, we headed to Hanapepe on the south shore for a shoreline hike on sculpted rock by Glass Beach.
We went to Hideaways Beach and it was also relatively crowded, but still nice.  I even convinced Lisa to join me for some snorkeling.
Lisa was kind enough to babysit on multiple occasions so we could get some nagging tasks completed and we certainly enjoyed her company throughout her 3 week stay.  It was a luxury for her to have the time off school to spend an extended period of time in HI and it was a luxury for us to have an extra set of hands around the house to control the ever more active Maddie.
